The US Saratoga (CV-3) was a Porte-avions of the American Marine of the Classe Lexington, the second aircraft carrier built in the United States.
History
The US Saratoga (CV-3) was the second Porte-avions of the marine of the United States. It was brought into service one month before the Lexington which gives its name to this class of aircraft carrier and is the third, after the US Langley and Saratoga. In order to make it possible to distinguish Saratoga from Lexington, its chimney is decorated of broad band black vertical painted to make it possible to the pilots to easily recognize it.Saratoga, and classifies it Lexington, was initially to be a Croiseur of battle. Started in 1920 with the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, its construction is cancelled and transformed into an ordering of aircraft carrier, the CV-3, in July 1922, following the treated of Washington which limits the naval armament of its signatories.
Launched in 1925, Saratoga was, just like the others of its class, one of the largest aircraft carriers of its time. Just like the Lexington , it played a big role in the concept of a fast force of attack and in 1928, the two ships took part in settings in situation in the Pacific.
At the time of the Attack on Pearl Harbor, it was with San Diego for restoration. It takes the sea to form quickly a third Task force (the two others being formed around the Lexington and of the Enterprise. January 11th, 1942, it is torpedoed by a Japanese submarine with broad of Pearl Harbor and is not any more service during the four months of repair. Used to convoy planes in the Center of the Pacific, it misses the Bataille of Midway but is, with Enterprise and Wasp, strongly engaged in the Campagne of the Solomon Islands like flagship of the admiral Fletcher. Torpedoed on August 31st, 1942, one week after the Battle of Solomon Eastern, it suffers light damage, but its its electric system is destroyed and the ship becomes unusable for three months.
In 1943 and 1944 it takes part in the operations of island in island and is then detached for India of the East to cooperate with the British and the French to tackle the Japanese positions of Java and Sumatra. In 1945, Saratoga is struck by a Kamikaze during the attacks of Iwo Jima. The undergone damage being important and the ship taking of the age, one assigned it with tasks of drive to Pearl Harbor.
July 25th, 1946, it is cast with broad of the Atoll Bikini within the framework of the Opération Crossroads, series of tests nuclear.
Saratoga received seven decorations for its services during the Second world war.
