The Armor is the maritime zone of the Brittany, in opposition to the Argoat.

The word comes from the continental Celtique Gaulois (of origin Norique to Central Europe) “rear” (access of) and “mor” (sea). One finds it in Armorique, but it should not be confused with this term (Armorique covers an old Celtic area covering also practically all the coast Norman.)

Etymology

Let us note that this “rear” noric have nothing to dohas nothing to do with the definite article Breton, homograph but of insular Celtic origin (Brittonique), that one finds in the Breton expression “ rear mor ”, the sea .

This “rear” proceeds in fact of an old Indo-European prefix (cf the Latin “per”, the Greek “para” or “share”, the German “VOR”), whose p intial fell (eg: Armorique: “are-mor-ica”, the “country which skirts the sea”). Indeed, the fall of the p initial is one of the characteristics of certain Celtic languages (to compare leun vs plenus, platus vs ledan, them vs floor,…)

In addition, the Breton prefix involves the lenitive change, also the term Arvor is righter while the article does not involve this change for the word “mor”. This is why one finds in Brittany of many place names, vis-a-vis the sea , called “Arvor” (into Breton: year Arvor ), more rarely “Armor”, which becomes, by joining of the article, “Larvor” or “Larmor”.
