UPDM

The UML Profiles for DoDAF/MODAF ( UPDM ) is an industrial standard UML of representation of the products of architecture DoDAF and sights MODAF through the process of standardization of the Object Management Group (OMG) based on an approach of Architecture directed by the models ( Model-driven structures , MDA) for the specifications. To refer to site UPDM with http://syseng.omg.org/UPDM.htm for more information.

Advantage of a framework of architecture standardized

With an industrial standard, it is possible to build, re-use, amalgamate, make evolve/move, to exchange or compare models of architecture in a collaborative way. UPDM for supporting communications among all the Recipients and to facilitate the analyzes based on the data-processing Architectures. With always more interest in planning of the forces for the operations of coalition, it becomes increasingly important to have the possibility of sharing and of bringing closer information to architecture developed by various nations which use a standard of industrial Cadre of architecture. UPDM will help to improve this situation.

The use of a Langage of modeling common in support to the Cadre of architecture significantly will improve quality, the productivity, and the effectiveness associated with architecture and modeling with the systems with systems; to improve the interworking of the tool and the communications between Recipients; and to reduce the requirements of new formations for the various tools and projects.

DoDAF v1.0 Volume II includes councils for the representation of the products of achitecture DoDAF which use UML. However, these councils are not sufficiently precise or complete to ensure of the coherent implementations and interopérables by the suppliers of tools UML and of interpretations by the architects and the users of models of architecture produced not these tools. Different implementations of suppliers involve problems of interworking between these tools and impose additional requirements of formation for the user S. Aussi, the current councils of implementation DoDAF UML are based on a previous version of UML and do not draw the advantages from the emergent support for the modeling of systems of systems, which is based on SysML and UML v2.0.

Moreover, the suppliers of tools are " challengés" to maintain a whole whole of adaptations DoDAF, like MODAF, which were created to satisfy the needs for several nationalities. For example, a abstract syntax of profile UML (extent with métamodèle UML 2.0) was defined so that MODAF supports the file-swapping based on XMI between tools and Répertoire S. But interworking with the tools DoDAF will be difficult because MODAF made minor modifications with the DoDAF products and added two new point of view of.

Solutions suggested

TEAM Alpha

This team, led by Telelogic, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Adaptive, Inc., Craftsman Software, BAE Systems, No Magic, Sparx Systems, and Thalès Group like by other suppliers and subcontractors proposes a solution based on SysML which incorporates also BPDM when that seems suitable.

TEAM One

This team, led by IBM, SAIC, CSCI, Northrop Grumman, EmbeddedPlus, like by other suppliers and subcontractors, proposes a solution based on UML.

Unified proposal

TEAM Alpha and TEAM 1 submitted a unified proposal in March 2007. Two levels of conformity are proposed: they correspond to the support of a profile based on UML and of a profile UML+OMG SysML™ profiles.
