UNKLE is a collective of Trip-hop/Abstract hip-hop which was born as of the beginnings of the label Mo' Wax under the supervision of the producer James Lavelle. At the origin called U.N.K.L.E. , the name of the group loses its points at the time of the exit of its first album.
Chronology
It is
James Lavelle, owner of the young label
Mo' Wax, which had the idea of this collective. It wished to make
U.N.K.L.E. an ambitious movement of the
Abstract hip-hop, young musical current. It joins together
Tim then Goldsworthy ,
Kudo (of the Japanese collective
Major Force ) and
James Lavelle which produces between 1994 and 1997 a series of maximum. Many a DJ is invited, like Geoff Barrow of
Portishead.
The collective is made somewhat forget, then reappears in 1998 for the exit of their first album, Psyence Fiction , where Tim Goldsworthy and Kudo was replaced by DJ Shadow. Thom Yorke of Radiohead, Mike D of the Beastie Boys and Richard Ashcroft took part in the album.
In 2004, new album ( Never, Never Land ), but this time, it is Richard File which replaced Shadow . 3D of Massive Attack like Ian Brown and Josh Homme of Queens off the Stone Age is invited. Lavelle also makes take part two groups of the label : South and The Psychonauts .
Style, claims, spirit
The collective
U.N.K.L.E. wants to be experimental and out of the beaten paths of the modern music. The use of samples of origin very diverse (cross for example on same the mix
The Beatles,
DJ Shadow and
DMX) altered in order to allow the amateur a basically divergent listening of the original pieces, makes it eclectic and unforeseeable when to the publication and especially to the contents of its albums.
The respect of the right of copyright or intellectual property remains obviously when with him contrary to the ideals of the group. No legal mention is observable on the majority of the albums that this one asserts, except for most known and marketed; in a rather logical way, those are not signed and a good part do not distribute herself any more but in Bootleg or on pirate networks.
The general kind is resolutely electronic, but without notorious particularization: entremèlent themselves with the wire of the pieces of environments which can approach to the Trance, the Trip-hop or the lyrics resolutely Hip-Hop.
Several committed cinematographic references will be noted, of which THX 1138 of George Lucas, or Clockwork orange , of Stanley Kubrick.
