UKUSA

The United Kingdom - the USA Security Agreement , often called treated UKUSA , is a treaty secretly concluded in 1947 between the the United Kingdom and the the United States; other countries were added there, like the Canada, the Australia and the New Zealand. Although rumors circulate for a long time about it, it is especially with the mediatization made around the system Echelon at the end of the Nineties that its existence was known by an important part of the public opinion.

Treaty UKUSA relates to the co-operation of the signatories in the field of electronic listening (COMINT) and has several objectives:

to standardize the methods and procedures, of work and safety
to organize the activities of the services of the various signatories

The exchanges between the signatories pass in particular through liaison officers, called SUSLO ( Special United States Liaison Officer ) for the Americans and SUKLO ( Special United Kingdom Liaison Officer ) for the British.

USA-News-Zealand collaboration would have been stopped in 1985, following the prohibition made with the American ships with nuclear propulsion accost in New Zealand. This interruption was suspended during the war of the Gulf to allow the exchange of information between the two countries, members of the coalition anti-Iraqi. The revelations of Nicky Hager on the New Zealand part of the network Echelon in 1996 show that this co-operation was maintained. The construction of the station Level of Waihopai, starting from 1989, even lets think that the co-operation was effective as of this time.
