The UEFA Cup , often called Cut of the UEFA and sometimes shortened in C3 , is a competition of Football which opposes European clubs. It was created at the time of the season 1971-1972 by UEFA to replace the Coupe of the towns of fair which, it, saw the day the April 18th 1955.

General information

The competition is opened to the winners of the national Cuts and with the clubs finishing their championship directly behind those which take part in the Ligue of the Champions. Finally three teams can take part in this competition on the basis of classification fair play.

The 16 clubs eliminated at the time of the third preliminary round of the Ligue of the Champions take part in the first tower of UEFA Cup whereas the third of the phase of groups of Ligue of the Champions take part in sixteenth of finale.

Since the season 1997-1998, the final is exploited only one match in neutral ground.

As it is the case for all the other competitions of clubs, the number of engaged by association and their point entrance in the competition depends on the coefficient UEFA of association.

Initially, the winners of national Cut took part in the Coupe of Europe of the winners of cuts and only the national champion took part in the Coupe of Europe of the clubs champions.

Remarks :

  • the winner of UEFA Cup plays the Supercoupe of the UEFA at the end of August at the Stage Louis II of Monaco against the winner of the Ligue of the Champions.
  • the Spaniard Enrique Ribelles gained C3 with 4 recoveries, in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1963, between Barcelona (2) and Valence (2).

  • Representing continent of Asia, the South-Korean Cha Bum-Kun gained it with 2 recoveries, with 2 different clubs. For the continent of North America, the Mexican Hugo Sanchez is to be quoted (1 victory); for the South American continent Argentinian the Jorge Valdano (2 victories). Africa is in particular represented by Frederic Kanouté

  • No French club forever gained C3: it is besides to date the only major trophy which misses with French football. On the other hand, the SC Bastia, the Of Gironde ones of Bordeaux and the Olympic one of Marseilles (twice) were finalists.

At the end of the season 1970-1971, the Coupe of the towns of fairs was replaced by the UEFA Cup . A match opposed the first and the last winner of the Cut in order to determine which could preserve the trophy definitively.
