UAZ , Ulyanovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (Russian: Ульяновскийавтомобильныйзавод, УАЗ) is a Russian manufacturer of car based in the town of Oulianovsk, from where its name. UAZ is specialized in manufacture of cross-country, of SUV, light utilities and vans. He is regarded as the 3rd member of the Russian Big Three , far behind AvtoVAZ, and after GAS.

Activities

Between 1941 and 2006, UAZ sold 4 million véhicles. On average, that represents 61.538 assembled units each year, which is compared to the other Russian manufacturers little, but also compared to world auto industry. In 2005, UAZ assembled 52.600 vehicles, in rise of 6,26%, whereas the Russian market dropped by 3% (any confused production). UAZ thus increased its market share, but it remains weak with 3,9%. However, UAZ being a specialist in cross-country, it is stronger on this segment, asserting 15% of market shares. These relatively good figures do not mask a decline of the manufacturer, his current production being definitely lower of its historical average.

The principal production of UAZ is the cross-country vhciule. But the military vehicles are actually vans identical to the civil machines, but raised and tranformées in 4x4; the total of the production of these vehicles exceeds that of cross-country.

History

Cars for the patriotic Great War

In June 1941, the Second world war begins on the face Is. The government Soviet, unable to contain the projection of the German army in the European part of its territory, decides to move the automobile factories and of armaments ZIS far from the zones of combat. The choice of the site is Oulianovsk, a city on the the Volga which an important river port and rail junction with infrastructures, and including/understanding very qualified workmen. This displacement temporarily puts the Soviet industrial potential at the ari of the engagements and makes it possible to continue the automobile production to push back the enemy. In 1942, the military production of vehicles and pieces of artillery began.

At the end of the world war, factory ZIS recovers its Muscovite buildings . The potential of production remains on the spot and a new manufacturer is born.

Reconversion post-war period

The factory lately creates had a new goal: to produce military and paramilitary cars. The rebuilding of the USSR is priority, but the development of the indsutries heavy and soldier as much, and UAZ must meet this new aim. In 1950, production of the first and only Soviet car the GAS -69 inspired of the German cars with begun. This car marks the beginning of the famous line of vehicles UAZ built by the factory.

In 1960 the research department launches a programme of renewal of UAZ while launching the UAZ-469 which was very similar in the design to the original jeep, a vigorous, summary and very rustic car which could lead in practically any ground. Uaz-469 became a legend as a solid car has all tests. The car did not enter the personal market until 1980 but it was especially used for the police force, its analog available in the trade was produced by LuAZ, which was too close to the border to manufacture military vehicles.

1966 mark the exit of the UAZ-452, which received warm welcome due to its possibilities at the same time of minis-van and cross-country. Although this car was reserved most of the time for the police force and for the use of army, but she saw much more civil use than the majority of the other cars of UAZ.

Uaz-469 and its modifications gained the legendary statute everywhere in the world for its capacities of crossing and its rusticity. Thanks to its qualities it was exported everywhere in the world it is an alternative to the jeep, Land Rover… its principal advantages are its cost and its solidity has all tests.

End of the USSR

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, UAZ was in position of liquidation. On the one hand, people were been willing to buy its cars due to their raised reputation, on the other hand, the imported cars was more prestigious and comfortable. The UAZ with product a slightly modified version of the UAZ-469, but the sales remained always weak. After the collapse of Soviet Union, Uaz tested many financial problems which had like consequence the deterioration of the quality and the cost-cutting which had as consequence the production of the cars of Uaz of bad quality compared with those made during Soviet time

In 2004, the factory was repurchased by the group Severstal, which did many investments in the company and had also bought the factory of car of ZMA (company).

In 2005, a new SUV Patriot at revealed summer.
