Ténéré

The Ténéré , “ deserted of the deserts ”, is the central part of the the Sahara which extends in Niger. The term comes from the Tamasheq - the language of the Touareg - and means simply “deserted”.

It extends on 1500 kilometers from north in the south and on 1200 kilometers of is in west (Tibesti (Chad), with the solid mass of the Aïr (Niger)). Ténéré is characterized by its erg S which can reach nearly 300 meters in height and which extend on thousands from kilometers.

It hides Oasis, like Bilma, Chirfa, Djado, Fachi, Seguedine and Dirkou, mainly populated Toubou S and of Kanouri S, as well as cities given up for still unknown reasons, like that of Djaba and Debessa.

History

Of 1983 with 1992, it is crossed by the Paris-Dakar. It is a prestigious stage because very difficult.

The September 19th 1989, the Flight 772 ATU, victim of an attack, explodes above Ténéré. A memorial must be built there.
