The Tyrrhenian Sea is part of the the Mediterranean. It forms a triangle limited to the west by the Corsica and the Sardinia, to the east by the Italian peninsula , and to the south by the Sicily. The coasts, very cut out are often bordered of islands. One finds there many seaside resorts. For the Romain S, it is the Tyrrhenum pond , i.e. “the Etruscan sea ” or sea of the Tyrrhéniens ( Turrēnikon pelagos for the Greek S).

The Tyrrhenian Sea opens with the Pliocène under the effect of the anti-clockwise rotation of the microphone-plate apulienne (of the the Apennines to the sea Adriatique). The oceanisation is there weak (not médio-oceanic wrinkle), but associated volcanicity is rather active with the Pliocène (left Northern) and with the Quaternaire (left Southern).
