Tyrrell collection
The Collection Tyrrell ( the Tyrrell Collection ) is one of the collections of the Powerhouse Museum of Sidney, Australia.
It is made up of a whole of photographs (nearly 8.000 glass plates) dating from the end from 19th and the beginning from the 20th century, and constitutes an important documentary source of the lifestyles urban and rural of this time.
The stereotypes come primarily from two photographic studios of Sydney (studios of Charles Kerry 1857-1928 and Henry King 1855-1923). This collection was gathered in 1929 per James R. Tyrrell, a bookseller of Sydney, in order to create an ethnographic museum.
Although the project was born never, James R. Tyrrell preserved the collection and sold it in the years 1980 with the press group Australian Consolidated Close which made of it gift with the Powerhouse Museum in 1985.
