Tyree mount

The Mont Tyree is the second plus high summit of the the Antarctic, located 13 kilometers at the north of the Massif Vinson (4 892m), more the high summit of the continent. It belongs to the Massif Sentinel of the Chaîne Ellsworth, at the base of the Péninsule the Antarctic.

It was discovered in January 1958 during the reconnaissance flights of the US squadron Navy VX-6, and charted during the same month by the Marie Byrd Land Crosses Party. The mountain was named in the honor of the rear-admiral David Mr. Tyree, which ordered the U.S. Naval Support Forces in the Antarctic, of the April 14th 1959 until the November 26th 1962.

Its rise is famous more difficult than that of Vinson. The first was carried out on January 6th, 1967 by Barry Corbet and John Evans, members of the team of Nicholas B. Clinch which had reached the top of the Vinson solid mass a few days before.

In 1989, the American mountaineer Terrance Manbeck “Mugs” Stump makes a success of the first rise of the western face, in solo and one day.
