Typology of the roads in Switzerland
In Switzerland, the roads are classified according to two criteria:
- Importance of the road (trunk road or cantonal)
- Class of the road (first, second or third class)
Importance of the road
Trunk roads
The trunk roads (for the majority of the highways) are planned and mainly financed by the Confédération. Their name starts with the letter has, even if it do not profit from the statute of highway. It is for example the case on the road A16 between Bienne and Péry.
Cantonal roads
The cantonal roads are planned and financed by the cantons, although the Confédération takes part in the expenses for certain important sections. They are generally of lower importance and are named in the following way:
The denomination H can be used in the place of has, J or T. It is particularly used for the alpine roads with an aim of preventing that one makes confusion with the highways.
