First play created by Alex Randolph and published by 3M in 1962, Twixt is a Jeu of company combinative abstract being played on a bored plate of holes distributed with the intersection of a grid of 24 lines out of 24 columns.

It was published since by other famous brands like Avalon Hill, Dujardin, Schmidt Spiele or more recently Kosmos

In spite of rules of an exemplary simplicity, this play offers parts an extreme depth.

Material.

The box contains:
  • a plate of play;
  • a whole of pillars and bridges white (white player);
  • a whole of pillars and bridges red or black (black player).

Foot-note bucket: there exists a special version of Twixt or the pillars represent turns and the bridges represent walls. It is about a rather rare edition. The play is also appeared in this form with the name Imuri .

Rules of the game

Basic rules

In this play the players must try to connect the opposite edges of the plate with a continuous line, the white player must create a vertical line and the black player an horizontal line.

To carry out this, the players are provided with pillars and bridges. Alternatively they place a pillar in an unspecified hole of the plate. After having placed his pillar, the player can connect two to two pillars belonging to him with bridges provided that these two pillars are at a distance corresponding to the distance from a riding with the Jeu of failures.

Before playing his blow, the player can withdraw one or more his bridges which could obstruct it. This makes it possible to make quasi-impossible the null parts.

The white player starts.

Special rules

Regulate cake

This rule applies to the first blow. One of the players places a white pillar on the plate, it is then with the other player to choose with which color he will play. This makes it possible to cancel the advantage of the first blow.

Handicap

If the difference between the players is too important, the weakest player will play the white and will be able to put its first pillar at the center of the plate. Of course the rule of the cake does not apply here.

Fast part

The part proceeds on a plate of 12×12.

With paper and pencil

It is allowed that the bridges of only one player cross. By consequence, it is never necessary to withdraw the bridges.

Conditions of victory

The player who manages to connect the two edges of the plate gains the part. If none of the two players arrives there, the part is null.

Where to play?

  • Between friends with a box of play.
  • Between friends with a sheet of paper squared, in this case there the pillars will be drawn with the intersections of the squaring and the bridges will be simple features between the drawn pillars.
