Twister Dungeon

Description

Dungeon Twister is a Board game of strategy writes by Christophe Boelinger, illustrated by Wayne Reynolds and Thierry Masson and published by Asmodée in 2004. Taking again the universe of the fantastic medieval roleplays such as Keeps and Dragons, it makes it possible 2 players to clash during approximately one hour parts.

The little story, pretexts with the part, tells that the two teams of adventurers were téléportées in a complex keep by a wizard wishing to be avenged. They will have either to kill out of the unfavourable characters or to cross all the rooms to reach the starting zone of the other team to manage to escape from the keep, to gain 1 point of victory in each case. The first team which gains 5 points of victory gains the part.

Mechanism of play

The players must constitute a team of 8 characters and 6 objects (weapons, armours, cords, potions… of which they will be able to benefit during the play.). They will place 4 characters on their starting small rules, (the entry of the Keep), the 4 other characters and the 6 objects will be placed in the various rooms of the keeps. The characters correspond to the usual prototypes of the classes of characters of the fantastic medieval roleplays. Each character is equipped with characteristics and capacities which are clean for him. For corser the course of the parts, the 8 square parts of the keep can swivel on themselves, thus changing the configuration of the labyrinth.

At the beginning of part, each player holds 14 charts in hand: 9 charts of combat, 3 charts of jump and 4 charts of action which offer each one 2 to 5 points of action. Each player in his turn, plays the number of action being reproduced on his chart which it is free to distribute as it wishes it between his alive characters. There exist 5 possible basic actions in a turn:

  • To reveal one of the 8 rooms which are hidden side at the beginning of the part provided that one of its characters has an access to this room.
  • To make swivel a room with the proviso of being held on the special box envisaged for this purpose.
  • To make fight a character according to the capacities of combat.
  • To move one of the characters according to its capacities of movement.
  • To use an object (parchment, ring or potion).

Once all the rooms are revealed, the chance does not intervene any more, and information is perfect. Indeed they are the values of the charts of combat which make it possible to define the exit of a confrontation, and each one has the same initial whole of charts. However each player preserves his secret charts, which requires for the unfavourable player to memorize the charts already played to anticipate the capacities of combat of the adversary. In addition, the engagements are solved in a simultaneous way, whereas the remainder of the play obeys the principle of the turn by turn.

A mixture of kind

Dungeon Twister is a play which has a strong strategic dimension. It borrows from the Roleplay for environment and from the Card deck to collect for the mechanisms of play but requires much practice to control all the potential of it, which brings it closer more of the combinative Strategy game abstracted; it does not belong however to this category, because it conceals a share of chance, even if it is very reduced, as well as an amount of simultaneity in the decisions.
