Twenty thousand miles under the Seas (film, 1916)
20000 Miles under the seas ( 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ) of Stuart Lump , is a silent film of 1916 and one of the very first to include underwater scenes.
Comment
As the title implies it, it is of course about an adaptation of the book of Jules Verne (in fact of two, since there is also integrated passages of the mysterious Island). The Williamson brothers having developed for this film, starting from an invention of their father, a system allowing to film under water, one is entitled to some long scenes of sea-beds where one sees sometimes some fish, but also, more interesting, with meetings of walks in Scaphandres or a battle with a giant inflatable plastic octopus (the tueuse octopus making here its first appearance with the cinema). The vision of film is rather pleasant because the play of the actors is as surprising as the remainder: some make of it too much (like the girl lost, and become wild, of the Nemo captain), others hardly play, and one has sometimes the impression that nobody agreed on the way of playing in this film. The possible accessories suppliers also spoiled us with decorations and costumes sometimes not very identifiable or on the contrary too. The course of the intrigue is not, him also, in remainder. A curiosity, therefore.
