Twelve Colonies of Kobol

The Twelve Colonies of Kobol constitute principal human civilization in the televised series of Science-fiction Galactica and Battlestar Galactica . They are called more usually Colonies of Kobol or quite simply the Colonies . Their inhabitants are called the Coloniaux .

Colonies

The Twelve colonies were founded there is more than 2000 years by the nationals of twelve human tribes originating in Kobol, the planet of origin of Humanity. Each tribe was installed on one of twelve planets of a distant solar system.

Each colony bears a name derived from the Latin name of one of the signs of the Zodiaque:

Even if all the Colonies share the same culture and the same religion (of graeco-latin inspiration) and make party of the same political entity, there exist contrasts.

Thus, the inhabitants of Gemenon are deeply monk and very conservatives (particularly on the level of manners). They have a literal interpretation and traditionalist of the Scriptures. The clergy of Gemenon is also very important. The inhabitants of Caprica as for them are more progressists and liberals.

In the original series of 1978, the inhabitants of Picon spoke a different language. In the remake of 2003, all the Colonial ones speak the same language. The producers of the original series changed the name of “Cancer” which had a pejorative connotation and replaced it by “Orion”.

In the remake of 2003, Sagittaron is the planet less developed of the Twelve, and more neglected. So much of Sagittariens (such Tom Zarek) have a certain resentment towards the other Colonial ones and the independence current is strong.

Position of the Colonies

The producer of Battlestar Galactica , Ronald D. Moore, indicated that the Twelve Colonies were in the same solar system. In Galactica , it was about the solar system of Cyrannus. In the new series, the name of star is not indicated.

Colonial government (1978)

In Galactica , the Colonies are controlled by a council of twelve members (one by colony), named the Quorum of the Twelve. It is directed by a president of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol, which is Head of the State. With the president and the Quorum a commander-in-chief of the Armed forces is added.

After the Destruction of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol and the death of president Adar and Quorum, the fleet of the survivors passed under the mode of the martial Loi, and thus was ordered by the Commander Adama.

In the Colonies, Justice is shared between Opposers (charge) and Avocats (defense). The capital punishment does not exist, the life imprisonment being the maximum sentence.

Colonial government (2003)

The colonial government in Battlestar Galactica resembles the US government of the Earth. It is composed of a president of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol, which is assisted of a vice-president. It directs a ministerial cabinet made up ministers and Secretaries of State, having each one a function (for example the Minister for Defense).

It is governed by a kind of Constitution, the Articles of Colonization , signed 52 years before the return of Cylons. This Constitution unifies the Twelve Colonies in only one federal political entity. Indeed, each planet was independent before the signature of the Articles. Each Colony to its colors and its badge. In addition, even if it is not known as explicitly in the series, each Colony has an internal government with planet, like in the case of Länder German. The local government of Gemenon for example, seems to be a Théocratie (even if that is not known as explicitly).

When the president Richard Adar is killed at the time of the attack of Cylons, it is Laura Roslin, only surviving of the ministerial cabinet (and former Secretary of State to Education) which becomes president by interim. A little later Gaïus Baltar will become its vice-president.

The Quorum of the Twelve as for is used to appoint him the vice-president and to take the interim in the event of crisis situation (as at the time of the destruction of planets by Cylons).

In addition, the capital of the Twelve Colonies is the metropolis of Caprica-City, on the Caprica planet.

Colonial army

The colonial army is divided into two branches:

the Colonial Flotte is made up of 120 men-of-war of the type Battlestar (kind of " aircraft carrier spatiaux"). Each battlestar transports several tens of vipers, small space, fast and handy fighter plans, as well as raptors, small spaceships of recognition and electronic Guerre. Each battlestar has of side guns and tubes missile launcher (nuclear and traditional), as well as detachment of Marines. The battlestars are organized in squadrons, named " Battlestar Group".

Religion

The Colonial ones have a pagan religion of Greek inspiration, with twelve gods (such Zeus, Apollon or Athéna). These gods are called the Seigneurs of Kobol.

According to this religion, the human ones, divided into 13 tribes, lived a long ago on the planet Kobol, controlled by the Twelve Gods. But one day, 2000 years ago, there be what the colonial religion called the Exodus. Twelve of the tribes left Kobol to be installed on twelve planets of another solar system, which were going to become one day the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. 13th, as for it, a long voyage undertook which carried out it towards remote and mythical planet, the Earth.

However, after the destruction of the Colonies by Cylons and the escape of the survivors, many Colonial revise their judgment. Indeed, they found the planet Kobol, as well as mythical the Tombe of Athéna mentioned in the Rollers. Moreover, they found well in this one of the indications as for the localization of the Earth, in accordance with the Writings.
