Twarab

The twarab - called thus with the the Comoros, and called taarab with Zanzibar - is a contest of Chant.

While Musicien S play of the impromptu topics on known airs, the Chanteur S improvise words, generally ironic and full with spirit, pretexts with all the mockeries, but also, to transmit various messages coded to the ears which can hear. The performances come as much from the singer as of the musician.

Whereas today, in Zanzibar, the taarabs did not lose anything of their caustic spirit of antan, in the Comoros, the twarabs are generally organized in the marriages and comprise words written for the circumstance.

The women are also allowed there and can sing.
