However, princes of Moscow, whose Ivan Kalita, had the considerable support of the Horde of Gold of which they proclaimed vassal, whereas Tver revolted several times against the Mongolian oppressors and sought to be combined with the Lithuania. At the end of the 14th century Moscow gained this competition, by pushing back several Lithuanian invasions and while launching a military campaign against Tver, in which the military forces of all Russian North-East took part. In 1380, the troops of Tver, subjected, took part in the battle of the field of Kulikovo under the command of saint Dimitri de Don, prince of Moscow.
After the foundation of Saint-Pétersbourg in 1703, Tver, halfway between the two capitals, lost all its importance, was emptied of part of its population and became a simple borough. The city, destroyed in 1763 (1768?) by a fire, was rebuilt in the neo-classic style by Catherine II.
