A tutu is a veil worn by the dancers. It is normally fixed on the Justaucorps and is mainly carried for the Ballet dancing. Whereas the costume appears in the Années 1820, it will bear the name of tutu only starting from 1881. In 1832, Marie Taglioni immortalise the Skirt assembled on several Underskirt S: the costume of the Sylphid becomes thus the uniform par excellence of the ballerina. Later, the tutu romantic white and length (sometimes until ankle) characterizes the dancing hearts ( Gisele , Bayadère , etc).

Associated as of the middle of the 19th century with the “petis rats of the Opera”, it is the uniform which the young pupils of the school of dance of Paris carry. In connection with these young recruits, Doctor Véron, then directing of the Opera, wrote: “A man of spirit gave, as one knows, a picturesque nickname with these children pupils of the dance, who could never remain in place, and whom an insatiable appetite unceasingly involves to nibble any species of things; he called them rats ” (Louis Véron, Mémoires of a middle-class man of Paris , Paris, 1856, volume III, p. 205).

At our time, the tutu is never carried in progress. The behavior of course is the Justaucorps, sometimes supplemented by a little skirt or the tunic, which is not other than a justaucorps with bent little skirt. The behavior of course is often called “tutu”, which contributes to preserve ballet dancing an image “rococo”.

Various types of tutus

There exist two principal types of tutus:
  • the long tutu, also called tutu romantic or tutu degas (by reference to the French painter Edgar Degas)
  • the tutu with plates, also called tutu with cerclette.

The choice of one or other of the tutus depends more of the type of Ballet represented than of a deliberate choice of the dancer itself.

Thus, certain ballets of the repertory do not think without tutu long (for example Gisele ) whereas the Lake of the swans is danced so to speak only in tutu with plates.

Manufacture of the tutu

The textiles used since the 19th century are white colors or broken white. They are light, transparent, fine, fluid and let pass the light.

The tutu can be manufactured starting from the following matters:
