Tourterelle is the vernacular Nom generic given to Oiseau X pertaining to three kinds of the family of the Colombidés:

  • Oena Swainson, 1837
  • Streptopelia Bonaparte, 1855 (including Nesoenas Salvadori, 1893)
  • Zenaida Bonaparte, 1838 (including Scardafella Bonaparte, 1855)

By extension, this name also indicates many small columbidés.

Terminology

The turtle-doves of white variety are often called also Colombe S in the language running.

The distinction between the Turkish turtle-dove and the merry turtle-dove, forms domestic ( Streptopelia risoria ) or savage ( Streptopelia roseogrisea ), is not obvious and their classification is still discussed. French considered initially that the merry turtle-dove was a subspecies of the Turkish turtle-dove. But more recently one classifies the two species like distinct or like formant a subspecies also including the turtle-dove with double collar.

The turtle-doves of breeding are most of the time Hybride S of these species.

One should not confuse the turtle-doves with the Tourtelette S which belong when-with them with the kind Turtur .
