Turnbuckle

A turnbuckle is a device making it possible to fix a cable at a fixed part with the possibility of regulating the tension of the known as cable.

This apparatus is mainly used in the field of the water sport (stay, dies…), but can just as easily tighten a clothes line.

The model more the current is thus made up:

  • a first element 1 , fixed on a structure S by a device of the type shackles, is prolonged by a threaded rod;
  • an intermediate body 2 is screwed on the first element;
  • the last element 3 includes/understands one second threaded rod (in opposite step with the first) which is screwed on the intermediate body, and a fastening to the cable C.

When one makes turn the intermediate body, while blocking the rotation of the threaded rods, the device changes length, involving a modification of the tension of the cable. Counter-nuts can be added to block the system with the desired adjustment.

There exist also hydraulic turnbuckles when the changes of adjustment are frequent (Pataras), as of the slat-turnbuckles which make it possible to change the length of the cable without exerting tension (light veil)
