Turn of television of Stuttgart

The turn of television of Stuttgart (in German, Stuttgarter Fernsehturm ) was the first tower of television of its type in the world. A steel pylon then usual was envisaged in the beginning. But the manufacturer of bridges and turns Fritz Leonhardt designed with Erwin Heinle a concrete needle whose widened top was to be also used for tourism (point of view…).

Thus, the tower of television of Stuttgart became the model many constructions in the world. It is built on foundations of only eight meters which, because of a rather unstable ground and raised weight, have three times the diameter of the pylon, which makes it possible the tower to deaden high wind forces.

It is on the Bopser hill in the Degerloch district on northern bank of the valley of Stuttgart. After 20 months of work, it was brought into service on February 5th, 1956 by the broadcasting of Germany of the South (today: broadcasting of South-west - SWR). The SWR diffuses from there its programs radios as well as the first chain ARD.

Inserted in a circle, the image of the tower constituted the logo of the company until fusion in the SWR. Although violently disputed during its construction, it quickly became the symbol of Stuttgart. After five years, the costs of construction were amortized by the import duties. Of the two panoramic platforms, there is a superb sight on the capital of the Land, the vineyards of the valley of the Neckar, the periphery of Stuttgart until the the Jura souabe and to the Black Forest. The clear days, the sight carries until the tops of the the Swiss Alps (for example until the Säntis).

The tower is equipped with 3 rotary headlights of 1600 W in addition to the usual red beacons. Those are lit of night and by bad weather and increase to 50 km.
