Turn of Spain 1994
The 49e edition of the Tour of Spain was held April 25th with the May 15th, between Valladolid and Madrid. It was gained by Switzerland Tony Rominger (Mapei-Class). This edition counted 20 stages for a total of 3531 kilometers. The general average of the winner rose to 38,333 km/h.
Tony Rominger, victorious of the two preceding editions is at the beginning the big favorite. Its dolphin in 1993, Alex Zülle and the veteran Pedro Delgado, twice victorious of Vuelta (1985 and 1989) are its principal rivals.
Tony Rominger takes the shirt of leader as of the prolog, before confirming in the sixth stage in Nevada Sierra where it against an attack of Mikel Zarrabeita. Switzerland counts already more than two minutes in advance on all its rivals after less than one week of race. The only one to draw its pin from the play is Laurent Jalabert, winner already of three stages.
Rominger gains to it against-the-watch of Benidorm, to take more than four minutes in advance to the general. The two stages of the Pyrenees do not change anything, but Switzerland gains its fourth stage all the same there. Jalabert continues to connect the victories with Saragossa and Pampelune. The interest of the race does not lie any more but in the fight for the podium between Mikel Zarrabeita, Alex Zülle and Pedro Delgado. Rominger still gains with the Valderzcaray, where Zarrabeita saves accuracy its second place.
The last week, with the sight of the crushing domination of Rominger, is animated only by the sprinter Laurent Jalabert who gains the 16th stage with the Lagos de Covandonga, proving his change in a more complete runner.
Rominger still gains last the against-the-watch before Jalabert does not gain its seventh stage in Madrid.
Tony Rominger becomes the first runner to gain three times Vuelta. It will have carried the shirt of leader of the prolog at the last stage, which had been carried out only by three runners before him (Berrendero, Anquetil and Maertens). It equalizes the record of days spent with the shirt of leader (32 days, just like Gustave Deloor).
It is the last edition of the Tour of Spain disputed in spring. Indeed, the plate of runners present never contains all the best world ones and UCI decides to transfer to September this race, to air the spring calendar.
