Turn of Navarre and Orval
The turn of Navarre and Orval belongs to defenses of the town of Langres. It was built between 1512 and 1519. Its roof goes back to 1825.
This work is located on the field of Navarre, a ground having belonged to the counts de Champagne, also Kings de Navarre.
Often compared with the Turn Magne, it remains the tower of most monumental Artillerie. Its diameter of 28 meters, its 20 meters height and its score of Embrasure S of shootings distributed on four levels make of it a work out of the commun run. Its walls, which reach 7 meters thickness, protect two strongly arched and casematées rooms. The artillery of its terrace was to protect the plate.
Almost completed in 1515 after four years of work, it was raised of 2,5 meters in order to increase the range of the guns installed on its terrace. This transformation in the course of construction involved the installation of a second level of Gargouille S and the one second realization tower: the tower of Orval. Protecting a slope from artillery in spiral, this one can convey the guns at the top of the tower of Navarre to the shelter of the enemy shootings. Into 1825, military Engineering transformed this tower into explosives magazine. A conical frame was then built in order to protect the lower rooms from the infiltrations.
