History
The idea for the tower came when mayor John Bickerstaffe commissioned the design of a new limiting terminal for Blackpool. In 1891, it invested £2000 of its own money 3 to form (with other local investors) Blackpool Tower Company which monitored the building and which remained in the order of finances up to 1964 the design was by local Maxwell and the Charles Tuke of James of architects, who monitored the building of the concrete bases and the metal structure, although the two men died little before the opening in 1894. All the cost (design and construction) was £300.000 (the equivalent today approximately of £21m). The tourists paid 6d the admission and another 6d a turn jusqu with the top. The oldest part of the tower is the aquarium, which is 20 years more than the external building. The aquarium was so popular that one decided it not to demolish it, but to build the tower around it simply. It remains open, although its design is completely changed. The famous ballroom of turn was built during 1897-1898 with the designs of frank Matcham and was opened in May 1899. It was commissioned by the company of turn in answer to the opening of the ballroom of empress, in the wintergardens. The ballroom was previously the house of turn, which was much smaller and occupied the back of the complex of turn.
