Tureia was discovered in 1791 by the admiral Edward Edwards whereas it was with the research of the mutineers of Bounty. Edwards baptized the Carysfort island, in the honor of John Proby, first count de Carysfort.

The island has an aerodrome with a long landing strip 900 meters. Almost all the arable land of Tureia is intended for the culture of the Cocotier.
