Symbian OS is a Operating system for Cellphones (one speaks about " Smartphone ") and PDA conceived by Symbian ltd. He is the heir to the operating system Epoc32 which equipped the Psion, and was born from a consortium between the various manufacturers (Psion, Nokia, Motorola…). He lays out of many API specific for the mobile communication voices and given, and implements the majority of the standards of communication: IPv4/IPv6, ms, Bluetooth, GPRS/UMTS, Java, WAP, SyncML

It was adopted by various cell phone makers of second generation (GSM and GPRS) and third generation (UMTS).

Versions

Symbian OS v5 or EPOC Release 5

Symbian OS v5.1 or ER5u . Support of the unicode.

Symbian OS v6.0 and v6.1 . First “opened” telephone, Nokia 9210 leaves with version 6.0.

Symbian OS v7.0 and v7.0s (2003). Major version on which many user interfaces were developed: UIQ, Series 80, Series 90.

Symbian OS v8.0 . (2004). This version introduces a new heart (EKA2) radically different into its operation.

Symbian OS v8.1 . Improvement of 8.0 available in 8.1a which continues to support EKA1 and 8.1b which supports EKA2.

Symbian OS v9.1 (2005). This version stresses safety. Only the signed applications can reach the critical functionalities of the telephone.

Symbian OS v9.2 (2006).

The user interfaces

Symbian OS provides the essential functionalities of the operating system, in particular the heart (named EKA2 in the last version), as well as the API communes and a user interface of reference. Each manufacturer develops his own user interface, and adds or removes functionalities. Thus, Series 60 and UIQ are two branches different of Symbian OS. Each version of these branches is based on a given version of Symbian OS.

The principal user interfaces are:

Serie 60 This User interface is most widespread among the telephones based on Symbian OS. Created by Nokia, it is characterized to version 3 by a nontactile screen, the support of an only numerical keyboard and some additional keys like a joystick, as well as keys with applicatif context (Softkeys). Starting from version 3 mainly, the interface is done more dynamic and the screen can have several sizes and forms. Series 60 is the user interface headlight of Nokia and was laid off with other manufacturers like Siemens, Sendo, LG…

Series 80 Created by Nokia, this user interface is intended for the " family; Communicator" and is characterized by an alphanumeric keyboard, 4 applicatives keys on the right-sided and a nontactile broad screen.

Series 90 Created by Nokia and is not now any more under development. This user interface was intended for the materials style PDA, with support of the touchscreen, not of keyboard.

UIQ Developed by UIQ Technology, today a company of Sony Ericsson, this platform is intended for the smartphones of the type PDA. UIQ is the second most widespread user interface on the Symbian OS telephones.

Very widespread FOMA at Japan, this platform with the characteristic to be closed; it is indeed impossible to install third applications.
