Tuque

History

1651 : arrival of the first white to the Amerindian territory Atikamekw with an aim of the évangéliser. Approximately 550 Amerindians occupy banks of the Saint-Maurice. The father Jacques Buteux, (first missionary Jesuit of the area), was one of the first white victim of the raids Iroquois.

Years 1980 : long and painful strikes for the employees of the factory of pastes and papers - and for the remainder of Latuquois - are the sign of a crisis of traditional industries of Tuque. The exodus of the young couples and the students towards the big cities of Quebec reduced to almost 10.000 people the number of inhabitants.

Origin of the name

The tuque term “ ” comes us in fact from the Périgord, where, at the time of the colonization of Canada, it was still used to indicate a Sommet , a Colline or a Promontoire . At the time of colonization, old French evolved/moved in Canadian dialect with absorption of words of various origins (including the Basque, the Catalan, the Wallon, the Flemish , various Amerindian languages and of course, English, to quote only the principal ones).

1972 : Constitution of the High-Mauricie municipality of starting from territory not organized.

1993 : High-Mauricie fusion of Tuque with to form the city of Tuque .

March 26th 2003: Fusion of Tuque with the municipalities of Bostonnais, the Eighth note, Lake-Edouard, the municipality of village of Relative as well as the totality of the not-organized territories composing the MRC of the High-Saint-Maurice. Tuque becomes of this fact the second municipality with the Quebec for its surface.

January 1st 2006: The municipality of Bostonnais and the municipality of Lake-Edouard were detached from the territory of Tuque.
