Tunneller

A tunneller is a machine making it possible to bore Tunnel S, such as for example the Channel tunnel.

Each tunneller is adapted according to the nature of the ground and the geometry of the work to be realized (diameter, curve, slopes).

The tunneller provides several functions:

  • Demolition of the ground,
  • Spoil removal (pickling),
  • Installation of supporting.

The most spectacular tunnellers are often médiatisés at the time of the great projects of civil engineering, mainly in the field of transport. Their diameter can exceed 10 meters. But this type of machine is also implemented for the realization of the networks of water conveyance, of sewers, the hiding of the electric lines with very high voltage… These types of realization have more modest diameters. For borings of a diameter lower than 1,5 or 2 meters one speaks microtunneliers.
