Tunnel of the drops
The Tunnel of the drops is a two-track railway tunnel a length of: 1791 meters which is on the line Caen-Flers, between the stations of Clécy and Berjou. It was bored in the schist with the dynamite in the years 1870. Work was completed in 1873 and its startup carried out on May 15th of the same year. It has a drainage canal to allow the drainage of infiltration. Taking into account the development of the liner trafic, it was planned to put it two-track. From this point of view, the single track was moved under the tunnel in 1910 in order to allow the installation of the second way. The economic consequences of the First World War involved the cancellation of this project. The Tunnel of the drops is famous to have sheltered the special train " ASIA" of Hermann Goering, probably in spring 1941, at the time of a meeting of German generals. During the summer 1944 it accommodated close to: 1200 refugees of the surroundings during the battle which led to the surrounding of the 7th German army in the pocket of Cliff. The Caen-Flers way was on the frontline from August 7th to 17th 1944.
