The tunnel of Glion is a highway Tunnel with two galleries crossing the slope located at the top of Montreux in the Canton of Vaud in Suisse. It is on a9 highway which connects the Canton of Vaud to the Canton of Were worth and was brought into service in November 1970. Of a 1350 meters length, it has a width of 9 meters for 7,5 meters in height.

Between 1970 and 2000, the traffic in the tunnel passed from 8.800 vehicles to 44.000 vehicles by day.

Restorations

Of April 15th with the end of November 2004, the southern gallery (side lake Léman) was renovated to be put in conformity with the increase in the traffic and the security standards resulting from the project “Tunnel Task Force” whose report was published the May 23rd 2000. The old tunnel was dark and presented risks in the event of accident with the absence of modern and adapted safety devices.

The traffic was derived towards the other gallery involving from important disturbances on the section between Vevey and Aigle. The choice of the period was justified by the tourist requirements, in particular the winter vacation which attracts many tourists in the canton of Were worth. The following year, at the same period, the northern gallery was remade with again stoppers on the section concerned, with latencies which can go up to 90 minutes.

The launching of work was the object of a polemic because of reflected on the economy of Were worth. A project to bore a third gallery was even considered but quickly abandoned. The budget of work was of 110 million Swiss francs including 86% coming from the Confederation, the remainder being financed by the canton of Vaud.
