Tunnel of Fourvière
The tunnel of Fourvière is a highway tunnel located on the French Autoroute A6, in full heart of Lyon, a length of 2 km with 2 X 2 ways. It bears the name of the hill which it crosses.
It was inaugurated in 1971 and constitutes the last section open on this highway, giving direct connection on the plunging A7 towards the Vallée of the Rhone and Marseilles since the Center of exchanges of Perrache (point 0). Built under the era of Louis Pradel, then mayor of Lyon, his role was to create a fast track (expressway) serving the downtown area to make remain the tourists in transit of North in the South in the Capital of Gaules. He is complementary to Tunnel of Cross-Russet-red the located in the axis of RN6.
Nowadays, these two tunnels do not suffice any more for this task and had to be doubled by the A46 and By-pass-Is RN346, the use of the latter becoming increasingly obligatory for the weight-heavy vehicles. This project slowly orchestrated by the local authorities is very décrié by the professionals of the road who show waste of time of course as well as useless kilometric lengthenings. A western skirting of Lyon east under discussion to unchoke the center town. Today he is very badly seen by the Lyoneses because this tunnel gives an bad image of the city with its stoppers and pollution.
The tunnel of Fourvière is in the course of rehabilitation and of setting to the security standards since 1997, involving its complete closing lasting certain nights and certain weekends. It was necessary to await the possibility of deviating the traffic being able of Paris by the Northern section of the open Peripheral this same year (Door of Valvert - Door of Cross-Luizet) to begin work.
In this tunnel, speed is limited to 70 km/h in the two directions. An automatic radar was placed just at the entry for Marseilles.
