Tunnel of Củ Chi

the tunnels of Củ Chi are an immense system of underground tunnels located in the zone of Củ Chi, one of the 5 suburban districts of Ho-Chi-Minh-City to the Vietnam. They are located at forty km in the North-West of the center town and 25 km only of the airport Than-Sound-Nhut. Initially created by the Vietnamese soldier Minh under French Indo-China (the network made a score of km then), these tunnels were considerably developed at the time it conflict américano-Vietnamese to reach approximately 250 km. The tunnels of Củ Chi were the place of several military campaigns during the Guerre of Vietnam, and were the base of operation of the Viêt Công at the time of the Offensive of Tết in 1968.

The tunnels were used by the combatants of FNL as masks during the engagements, of transportation, provisioning, hospital, reserve routes of food, arms manufacture and true districts where they lived under appalling conditions.

All the attempts armed to neutralize the tunnels failed and no technique implemented will come to end from this network (bombardments, defoliants, napalm, use of dogs and " rats of the tunnels" : commandos specialized in the operations " search and destroy" tunnels).

The importance of this system of underground tunnels should not be under estimated in resistance that FLN opposed to the American operations. Their role in the stop of the war is not negligible.
