Tunnel Prado-Careenage
Current the Tunnel Prado-Careenage is an underground axis of circulation of long Marseilles of: 2500 meters connecting the southern districts of the city and the highway Is in the center town and north via the tunnel of the old port and the highway of the littoral. It was opened with circulation in 1993. This tunnel re-uses an old railway tunnel and was prolonged by the tunnel Louis-Rège .
It is about the first urban tunnel paying of France (others exist in Lyon and as from October 2007 Western A86 in Ile de France): it cost of them 10 francs per passage in 1993. In 2007, the full price is of 2€70, that is to say a little more 1€ kilometer. Although it is one of the most expensive roadways of France, the motorists are numerous to borrow it so that the traffic there is very slowed down at the rush hours.
The tunnel Prado-Careenage
Its two entries are located in the basin Careening, close to the entry of the Old port, and near the entry of the highway Is (A50). The entry of the basin of the Careenage itself is connected to the entry of the highway of the Littoral (A55) by the tunnel of the Major (direction South-North), and the tunnel St-Laurent dug under the Old port. It is thus possible to circulate from one highway to another without crossing the center Marseillais town, famous very encumbered. It is currently the only way of the highway type making it possible to cross or avoid the center town.Its construction made it possible to re-use the railway tunnel of the same name builds between 1873 and 1878 which made it possible to pass from the basin Careening to old the Gare of the Prado: the upper part of the current tunnel makes up of this old tunnel and the lower part was dug then to twice allow a road traffic on two superimposed ways, with a direction by level.
The concession of the tunnel is held until 2025 by a privately held company: the SMTPC (Marseilles Company of the Tunnel Prado-Careenage) which ensured of it the control of work and its financing.
The Louis-Rège tunnel
In agreement with the urban community Marseilles Provence Metropolis, the SMTPC built a free underground work, the tunnel Louis-Rège which connects the avenue of Prado to the entry close to the highway Is tunnel Prado-Careenage, making it possible to facilitate the exchanges of traffic between the tunnel and the Southern districts of the city. The SMTPC will be also dealer of the Louis-Rège tunnel until 2025. It entered in service in 2007.
