Tunisia 21

Tunisia 21 (rear RTL تونس 21), in the past called Channel 21 (rear RTL قناة 21), is a public Television channel Tunisia.

History of the chain

The chain is created the March 20th 1994, on instruction of the president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, as the chain intended for the young people. It is officially launched the November 7th 1994 on the second up to that point occupied hertzian domestic network by France 2. It diffuses its programs only between 17:40 and 20:15 in the place of those of France 2 (in particular during the Tv news of 20:00 considered to be critical towards the Tunisian government).

Following the triumphal re-election of the president Ben Ali in 1999 (with more than 99% of the voices), the media French, whose France 2, criticize the Tunisian government violently and fustigate the lack of Démocratie mode. In reaction, this last nap ERTT to put an end to the diffusion of the French chain, which is made at the end of October 1999. Since this date, the second terrestrial network is entirely occupied by Canal 21 which emits 14:00 at midnight.

However, the chain pains to find its public since a few years (with a share of audience not exceeding the 5%) because it is strongly competed with by the deprived national chains and the other Arab chains diffused by satellite. Moreover, its diffusion is exclusively hertzian (starting from nine principal stations and 63 secondary stations distributed on the Tunisian territory ensuring the cover of 99,6% of the population).

The July 25th 2007, the president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali announces in a Discours the “reconversion of the national second channel of television Canal 21 in satellite channel in a new form and with modern programming. ” The chain is actually renamed Tunisia the 21 November 7th and starts to emit on the satellite the same day. The diffusion is done between midday and midnight whereas a new grid and a new preparing of the chain are set up.
