Tungsram is a Hungarian company founded in 1896 and which produces electric bulbs as well as vacuum tubes. The name comes from the contraction of Tungstène and Wolfram . This last part coming from a patent which it obtained for a bulb with a wolfram filament (German Tungtène in ) in 1903. The company starts to use the Azote in its bulbs in 1911. In 1934, it announced the development of the bulb to the Krypton of Imre Bródy for which it taken a patent. Tungsten and krypton give more a long life to the electric bulbs.
Tungsram created the first research laboratory industrial in Europe in 1922 and it is known for its research in several related fields with the vacuum tubes. It launches out in television in 1937, Zoltán Lajos Bay worked there on a Radar with Micro-onde used in 1946 to obtain echoes returning of the the Moon and, in 1976, the company opens a division of research and production in Laser S. The latter will become LASRAM Laser Ltd in 1992.
Tungsram became a Filiale of General Electric the November 15th 1989, but the name is always its Brand name.
