Tullianum

The Tullianum is the name of oldest the Prison of Rome, dug at the 7th century before our era, under the reign of Ancus Marcius according to the tradition, with the foot of the Capitole. The prison was increased by Servius Tullius which will leave him its name. It will be still increased under Tibère: denomination of prison Mamertine date of the the Middle Ages.

It was an underground prison on two floors. According to the historian Salluste: “ It contains a low room, named Tullianum, which is inserted with twelve feet under ground. It is closed thick walls and glaze of a stone vault. It is a dungeon swine, obscure, repugnant, whose aspect has something of frightening and horrible.

Because this sinister place was not used only as place of detention, but also of execution.

Jugurtha, Vercingétorix and Séjan there was imprisoned, and carried out with a lace by Strangulation. Cicéron made there carry out the accomplices of Catilina.

According to the catholic tradition medieval (unfounded), it is there too that the Apôtre S Pierre and Paul were held. A furnace bridge their was dedicated in the dungeon during the 19th century. Today, the prison is surmounted by a church.
