He was recognized by Khakyab Dorje, the 15th Karmapa like the reincarnation of Guru Chöwang Tulku, as well as the emanation of Nubchen Sangye Yeshé, one of the principal disciples of Padmasambhava. First Guru Chöwang (1212 - 1270) was one of five Kings Tertön, the revealing ones of the Termas, secret texts hidden by Padmasambhava. The principal monastery of Tulku Urgyen was Lachab Gompa in Nangchen with the Eastern Tibet. It studied there and there practiced the lesson of the lines Nyingma and Kagyu. Its family line was the principal holder of the line Barom Kagyu, one of the four Major Schools of the line Kagyu.
In the tradition Nyingma, Tulku Urgyen held the complete lesson of the three large Masters of the 18th century, at the origin of the movement Rimé: Chogyur Lingpa, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo and Jamgon Kongtrul Lodrö Taye. It accepted a particularly direct transmission of Chokling Tersar - a compilation of all initiations of the lesson of Padmasambhava - since this one was redécouvert by its own great-grandfather Chogyur Lingpa. Rinpoché transmitted this tradition to the regents of the line Karma Kagyu and with very many others Lamas and Tulkus.
The close relation between the line of the Karmapa S and that of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoché starts with 14th Karmapa which was one of the principal heirs to the termas of Chogyur Lingpa, receiving the transmissions of the Tertön in person. Tulku Samten Gyatso, the grandson of Chogyur Lingpa and LAMA-root of Tulku Urgyen, offered this same transmission to 15th Karmapa Khakyab Dorje. The 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, accepted the principal transmissions of Chokling Tersar de Tulku Urgyen Rinpoché, which had also happy fortune to transmit Dzogchen Desum, the Three Sections of the Great Perfection, in Karmapa and Dudjom Rinpoché, like with many tulkus of the schools Nyingma and Kagyu.
Tulku Urgyen Rinpoché established six monasteries and centers of retirement in the area of Kathmandou. Most important are the monastery located at Bodhnath close to large the stupa, and a center in Asura Cellar Parp' ing. Itself lived in Nagi Gompa, a hermitage located on the Shivapuri mount at the north of Kathmandou. It guided there more than three hundred monks and nuns.
