Tulcea (in Bulgarian, Russian, and Ukrainian Тулча , Toulcha ; in Turkish Hora-Tepe or Tolçu ) is a Rumanian city, chief town of the homonymous judeţ, located in Dobroudja, an area of the Romania. Tulcea is located on banks of the the Danube and counts 91.875 inhabitants.

It was founded to the VIII E under the name of Aegyssos . It is mentioned in the documents of Diodore of Sicily. Ovide mentions it in ex Ponto , and writes that its name is that of its founder, a Dace called Carpyus Aegyssus .

At the 1st century, Aegyssos was conquered by the Romains, which established a base for their fleet there defending the border of the North-East of the Empire, reinforcing it by walls of defense and large towers (of which the ruins are still visible).

Tulcea then passes under the control of the Byzantine Empire (), of the République of Genoa (). It forms then part of the local polities of Dobroudja de Balik/Balica, Dobrotitsa/Dobrotici, and, shortly after 1390 it is under the domination of the Wallachian prince Mircea concealment Bătrân.

In 1416, the city was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, and was allotted to Romania, as well as the remainder of Dobroudja, in 1878. Around 1848, Tulcea was always a small town whose activity was the shipyards. The statute of city was granted to him in 1860, when it became a capital of province.

Demography

According to the census of 2002, Tulcea has a population of 91.875 inhabitants, of which 92,3% are Rumanian. The significant groups of minorities include Lipovènes (making approximately 3,4% of the total population) and of the Turks (1,4%).
