Tudhaliya IV

Tudhaliya V is a king hittite, whose reign goes from -1238 to -1215. It succeeds his father Hattushili {{III}}. The queen-mother Puduhepa, principal wife of Hattushili and undoubtedly mother of Tudhaliya, plays a great part during her reign.

On the military level, its reign is marked by the conquest of the kingdom of Alashiya, undoubtedly located on the island of Cyprus. Like his father, he knows vexations vis-a-vis Assyrie, whose king Tukulti-Ninurta {{Ier}} inflicts several reverses to him, of which the effects remain however limited. He signs a treaty of alliance, retranscribed on a shelf of bronze found in Hattusha, with his cousin Kurunta of Tarhuntassa. But it seems that this last tried in success to go up on the throne hittite, on which it had rights, being the son of Muwatalli.

Tudhaliya V was very active on the religious level in its own country. It restores and aggrandit the rupestral sanctuary of Yazilikaya, where it is made represent in company of its protective god, Sharruma. Its reign undoubtedly sees the divinities Hourrites like Teshub, Hebat and their Sharruma son to take a dominating place in the royal Pantheon hittite. Tudhaliya itself bore a name hourrite, Tashmi-Sharruma, before taking its name of reign. It is probable that this “hourritisation” of the kingdom hittite was done mainly under the impulse of Pudu-hepa, itself of origin hourrite, just like the royal dynasty hittite.

Died of Tudhaliya V, his/her son Arnuwanda {{III}} succeeds to him until -1210, before another of its sons, Suppiluliuma {{II}}, does not go up in its turn on the throne.
