The Tucker “48 is a model of Automobile carried out by Preston Tucker in 1948 whose 51 specimens were produced with Chicago.
This large truck of 5,3 m (footing of 3,3 m), of a width of 2,08 m, drawn by Alex Tremulis has an aerodynamic smoothness (Cx of 0,30), its third directional central headlight, its wings before deeply indented and its doors of the “hermetically-sealed” type.
The remarkably roomy cockpit is furnished with two benches whose cushions are interchangeable “to equalize wear”. The instrument panel is upholstered, the Pare-brise is ejector, the body is deformable (to absorb the inertia of a shock) and safety belts are envisaged. The suspension is independent with the four wheels.
The engine placed at the rear is one six cylinders flat with Soupape S at the head of 5,5 liters out of aluminum derived from that of a Hélicoptère Bell to which one added a water cooling. This engine of 166 horses is coupled with a semi-automatic box at four speeds with Bendix preselector and gets for this propulsion performances to be made redden its rivals: 192 km/h out of top speed and stopwatch a 10 second old to buckle the 0 to 100 km/h.
In the beginning the brakes are with disc, the engine is equipped with injectors and the transmission is automatic. But of the more ordinary devices are finally installed.
The engine is dismountable in half an hour.
The difficulties being multiplied the production ceases well before the thousand which were to leave for this year. The investors lose their setting of funds. Nowadays this vehicle of collection still exists in 49 specimens.
