Harry Potter and the goblet of fire ( Harry Potter and the Goblet off Fire ) is the fourth tome cheese of the series Harry Potter written by J.K. Rowling. It is appeared for the first time in London in 2000. The French translation for the editions Gallimard Jeunesse is ensured by Jean-François Ménard, itself writer.

Summary

The novel opens on the “house of the Plays of the fate”, in the village of Little Hangleton. One penetrates there with Frank Bryce, gardener of Jedusor, the former owners. Since the strange death of Mr. and Mrs Jedusor and their son Tom , the house is left with the abandonment, except the garden that Frank continues to maintain for a new owner, rich person and unknown of tous.
However, in this night of August, in this dilapidated manor, a light scintillates. Frank leaves an old key and enters the house where it surprises a conversation between two men: it is there question of sorcery, magic, Moldus and some Harry Potter. The gardener finds himself then vis-a-vis the “thing” which of its armchair, gives orders. Of horror, of stupor, it starts to howl and fall dead, struck down by a green ray It is at this time that with three hundred kilometers from there, Harry Potter awakes in start. It knows from now on that its enemy of always, the assassin of his parents, the black magus most powerful, that which one hesitates to name, Lord Voldemort in person, takes again forces and capacity, animated of a precise goal: to kill, him, Harry Potter.

Starting from there the additives and opponents set up themselves. The reader follows Harry in Poudlard, the school of sorcery where it continues his training. He finds there Ron and Hermione, all his friends, his professors but also his rivals. This year, the establishment is in agitation: one has organized there the “Tournoi of the Three Wizards”, deferred for seven hundred years. This “friendly” competition joins together the three most prestigious schools of magic of Europe. Poudlard must elect its candidate; Harry and its friends, who do not have the necessary age to be registered, follow the event with interest. It is the Goblet of fire which, as an impartial judge, chooses the name of the three champions of the future tournament. The finished election, facing the traditions, the cut rougeoie again and projects out of the flames a fourth name, that of the young person Harry Potter. Error, imposture, trap? At all events, the cut is sovereign and Harry Potter will take part well in the tournament, because they all are bound by a magic contract that the cut establishes between the champions. New initiatory course in three stages where its endurance, its intelligence but also its generosity and its moral fiber will be put to the test. There are 3 tests the first consists in passing in front of a dragonne and stealing a gold egg to him which contains a enigma making it possible to prepare with the second test. Second test which consists in finding an object which was taken with each champion; " the objet" taken in Harry being his/her friend Ron.

Tests being quite as dangeureuses ones that the others, Harry will have to face much more than of simple magic spells. The magic creatures will be its principal rivals and it will have to show a great logic to try to make a success of the three imposed tasks.

The last task consists in leaving a labyrinth by adapting the Trophy kept by a giant spider. But ultimate surprised and the last combat, most frightening, await Harry Potter which, abruptly, is found with the foot of the tomb of Tom Jedusor and attends the rebirth of Voldemort.

Critical

In front of the immense best-seller, the work of Rowling already was analyzed much. One underlined the various influences which its novels evoke: William Makepeace Thackeray, Lewis Carroll, even John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and the Lord of the rings . Here, it is right, seems he, to raise as of the beginning the influence of Edgar Allan Poe: the house “of the Plays of the fate” and the atmosphere which reign make there think of another dilapidated residence, the Maison Usher : “(...) I was past alone, with back of horse, by a path of the singularly sinister country, and with long I was, while the shades of the evening went down, with range of sight of the Maison melancholic person of Usher. I do not know how that took place - but, as of the first glance about the building, an unbearable feeling of darkness invades my spirit.” ( the Fall of the house Usher , Poe). It is certain that with Harry Potter , the author falls under the British tradition of the Fairy Tale , mixture of marvellous Conte and Gothic novel.

The richness of the Conte is due especially to the humor of the caricature and the unslung imagination of Rowling. If one is afraid, if the monsters are really monstrous, if death grinds and strikes, one laughs nevertheless much. There is initially an aspect ludic, free, even poetic: thus, the “large Lady” within its framework, left caretaker of Poudlard, which opens the door of the Tower if one gives him the password, and who sometimes receives a friend, a lady of another framework; the “pensine” also, with the moon reflections, which make it possible to empty the spirit when it overflows of thoughts and memories… Social caricature, also, with the trade-union speech of Hermione which wants to create the Front of Release of the Elves of house ; with this journalist in the search of scoops for the Gazette of the Wizard and whose “feather with papote” writes untrue articles which influence the opinion. Better still, satire of the “human comedy” which denounces the men such as in themselves, plugged by the capacity and passions. All that with the lightness of a female writing which has fun, while leaving nicely the claws.

Placé under the sign symbolic system of Fire, the tale is initiatory. At the conclusion of a combat against the Evil, Harry will reappear, as the Phoenix which assists it in the test. He learns that the solution with our problems is not in the blows of rod, was she magic, but in us… In “bravery”, in the friendship and fidelity too. He is banalities always good to recall to any time. And then still, there is this professor Albus Dumbledore, if wise, if human, so just; he which says to Harry: “It is necessary to include/understand reality before being able to accept it and only the acceptance of reality can allow the cure” , and further: “To deaden the pain during some time will only make it more intense when you feel it again” . Dumbledore psychoanalyst? Why not. After all, the Détraqueurs which Harry must face are quite responsible for monstrous depressions. Then, Harry speaks and “it was a little as if one extracted a venom to him from the body” .

The tale is completed on an anthem with the will, the training and the power of the Verb. To the friendship also enters the people: “the differences of language and culture are nothing if we share the same objectives and if we remain open the ones to the others. ” (final speech of Dumbledore)
