Tubarão

Tubarão is a city Brésil ienne south of the State of Santa Catarina. It is located at a Latitude of 28° 28 ' 00" south and with a Longitude of 49° 00 ' 25" west, with a Altitude of 9 meters. The municipality extends on 300 km ² and its population was estimated at: 95339 inhabitants in 2006.

The city owes its name with the local river, the Rio Tubarão, called Tubá-Nharô (“wild father”) in Tupi-guarani. Its name does not have thus anything to see with homonymous fish, tubarão (“Portuguese shark”).

History

With the opening of the road between Lages and Tubarão, around 1773, begins the settlement of the city. The Rivière Tubarão was located on the road of Lages at Laguna, with like stopovers the ports of Poço Fundo and Poço Grande , both in the area of current Tubarão. In August 1774, two sesmarias, located in the current urban perimeter, were given to the captain João da Costa Moreira and to the quartermaster-sergeant Jacinto Jaques Nicós, marking the beginning of the effective settlement of the area. Tubarão separated from Laguna in May 1870. European immigration, the establishment of the Railroad Teresa Cristina and the creation of the Comarque of Tubarão, in 1875, allowed the economic development of the city.

In 1974, the city was touched by one of principal the Inondation S of the history of the Santa Catarina and even of the Brésil. It caused the death of 199 people and made: 60000 homeless people among: 70000 of the city at the time.

Geography

Tubarão is located in the south of the State of Santa Catarina, to 66 km of Criciúma and 133 km of Florianópolis. Among the closest cities, one can quote Gravatal, Treze de Maio, Jaguaruna, Pedras Grandes, Laguna, Capivari de Baixo, São Ludgero and Orleans.

Culture

Da Cidade put

In full center town, one finds the Casa da Cidade , an arts center, place of permanent exposures of art, course and various conferences, among other cultural activities. It presents an architecture which evokes the old colonial houses.

Built at the XIXe century, the Put da Cidade , was restored in 1984. In the past, this residence was used as residence with soldiers and politicians. It also sheltered the town hall. In Christmas, the building is transformed into House of the Father Christmas.

Museums

The town of Tubarão comprises three principal museums.
  • Walter Zumblick: this museum, inaugurated the May 30th 1995, gathers Indian culture objects (coming from different the sambaquis from the area) and of the animals belonging to local fauna;

  • the Municipal Center of Culture shelters the Museum Willy Zumblick, of the photographs and the historical articles on Tubarão, as well as a public library.

  • Railway Museum: it preserves the memory of the way of railroad Dona Teresa Cristina - RFFSA - one of last nowadays sees railroad of the world still running on the vapor.
