Tsuga
The trees of the kind Tsuga , called pruches with the Quebec, are very decorative Conifère S with their irregular silhouette and their slightly hanging branches and branches. They belong to the family of the Pinacées.
The tsuga comes from North America and Asia, where it grows in fresh places, often rock, such as for example the wet throats. This tree, which is not a fir tree, in spite of the name that one gives him (fir tree of the Canada), was introduced in Europe since 1740 and since was propagated considerably. One generally finds it in the parks and the gardens. On the other hand, it is only little exploited because its wood is of rather poor quality. He likes the sites wet and not too hot but also thrives in the half-light.
The American call it “Hemlock”, which wants to say cigué. This corresponds to the odor which its needles release when one them ruffled.
He can measure up to 20-60 meters in height, with a broad and irregular pyramidal form. This conifer has only one trunk in its country of origin but can have several in Europe of them.
Its branches are horizontal or rising skew, always deposited irregularly. The growths are brown clear and hairy, with spines from 5 to 15 mm of length, soft, punts and blunted. They are clearly sawn at the edge, being narrowing base with the point little by little. The cones measurements 2-7 centimetres length, are of oval form and are laid out on a short stem. Its scales are round and whole.
The tsugas were described for the first time by Élie-Abel Carrière (1818-1896), French botanist.
One meets 9 species of them:
- Tsuga canadensis ( Pruche of Canada )
- Tsuga caroliniana ( Pruche of the Caroline )
- Tsuga chinensis ( Pruche of China )
- Tsuga diversifolia ( Pruche of Japan )
- Tsuga dumosa ( Pruche of the Himalayas )
- Tsuga forrestii ( Pruche de Forrest )
- Tsuga heterophylla ( Pruche or Hemlock of the West )
- Tsuga mertensiana ( Pruche subalpine )
