True Whig

The True Whig Party was the only legal political party with the Liberia of 1878 to the coup d'etat of the sergeant Samuel Doe in 1980. This hegemony is regarded as the first political system with sole party of the world.

In the beginning, its ideology was largely inspired by that of the liberal party étatsunien, the Parti Whig. It was the principal instrument of the exercise without division of the capacity in Liberia by the descendants of the American black slaves installed on this territory starting from 1821.

Indeed, until in 1945, only the colonists Afro-Americans and their descendants enjoyed the statute of citizen, and thus the right to vote. The indigenous population as for it was controlled to a mode of obligatory work in the large plantations. In the Années 1930, Liberia still sold for example forced workers (as much to say slaves) with certain Portuguese colonies, which caused in 1931 the protest of SDN and a five years boycott by the the United States and the Great Britain.

True Whig then continued to be regarded in Occident as a guarantor of stability. The Western countries, in the forefront of which the United States and the Germany, invested massively in the country under the presidency of William Tubman, between 1944 and 1971.

The party lost the capacity in April 1980 after the fall and the assassination of William Richard Tolbert junior, reversed by a coup d'etat. The majority of its partisans left her rows then.

True Whig took share with the elections of 2005, within the Coalition for the transformation of Liberia.
