Tropical storm Matthew (2004)

Matthew is a Tropical storm, 14th cyclonic phenomenon of the season 2004. It is the first use of the name of Matthew for a cyclonic phenomenon, appeared in the list to replace Mitch.

Chronology

Matthew developed starting from a broad zone of low pressures located in the west of the Gulf of Mexico, this depression coming from a tropical Onde left the African coasts the September 19th, but difficult to follow because of its proximity with the hurricane LISA. While organizing the October 9th, the Tropical storm moves towards North, but the shearing winds limit its development, its intensity remaining very fluctuating. By reaching the coasts of Louisiana the October 10th, Matthew is retrogressed in Tropical depression.

Assessment

In spite of weak damage on its passage, Matthew involved strong precipitations in Louisiana, reaching 460 mm with Reserve, small village on Right Bank of the the Mississippi and causing important floods with Terrrebonne and Saint-Bernard (this last parish will be devastated the following year by Katrina).
