Tromsø
Tromsø ( Romsa in language same) is a city in the county of Troms in Norway, located above the Polar circle at 69° 40' 33” North and 18° 55' 10” Is, of a surface of 2.558 km ², and which counted 63.172 inhabitants in 2005. It is called “Paris of North” by the Norwegians.
History
The city was founded towards 1250 and knew an expansion at the end of the 19th century when it was used as a basis for many Arctic forwardings. During the Second world war it was used briefly as seat with the Norwegian government.
Activities
It lodges the Université of Tromsø, most septentrional in the world, accommodating 9.000 students. Researchers of all nationalities come to study there the environment of the polar zones and their old populations, the Océanographie, the Climatologie or the northern lights (with the European radar Eiscat).One finds there a hospital specialized in “télémédecine” by satellite which employs 2.500 people, and an institute of higher learning of the fishing of world reputation.
