Triumphal arch of the Carousel

The Triumphal arch of the Carousel is a Triumphal arch going back to 1809 builds by Napoleon Bonaparte. It comprises entries on each of the four faces (Tétrapyle). It is located in the Ier district of Paris. It is on the Place of the Carousel, just in the west of the Louvre.

History

Built in homage to the Large army of Napoleon Bonaparte between 1807 and 1809, the monument is located in front of the palate, on the esplanade preceding the wing by the Tuileries (before it burns in 1871). Celebrating the victory of the French Army with Austerlitz, the triumphal arch, drawn by Charles Percier and Pierre-François-Léonard Fountain, illustrates the countryside of 1805 and the capitulation of Ulm in 1807.

Description of the arc

It explicitly refers to the triumphal arches of the Roman empire. The subjects of the low-reliefs illustrating the battles were chosen by the director of the Napoleon museum (located at the time with the palate of Louvre), Vivant Denon, and draw by Charles Meynier.

The Quadrige of Chevaux of Bronze of Constantin Ier surmounting the arc is the attachment of the Basilique Saint-Marc of Venice, that the French Army carried out by the general of the armies of Italy Napoleon Bonaparte brought back Venice in 1798, after the victorious countryside of the French in Italy of north. It is surrounded by two victories as from 1808. In 1815, following the Battle of Waterloo and to the fall of the emperor (Restoration), the Austrian S return the horses to Venice. A copy is then carried out by the sculptor François Joseph Bosio.
