Triumph Trident
The Trident is a model of motor bike builds by the British firm Triumph.
750 Trident T150 and T160
As of the beginning of the Years 1960, two engineers, Bert Hopwood and Doug Hele, think of a new engine, derived from that equipping the Twin Speed. The principal request was to offer an engine of big-engined car, by reducing the vibrations. The three cylinders is obtained by adding a cylinder and two bearings crankshaft to the twin-cylinder. But the direction of the factory is not persuaded that this new architecture can be commercially profitable. The two engineers thus develop the Trident without the support of the factory.A first prototype named P1 appears in 1965. It uses an engine of 748 cm ³ (63 X 80 mm), with a primary transmission by gears. The cycle part comes from a Bonneville.
A second P2 prototype is born in 1966. The cubic capacity of the engine is in fall, 740,4 cm ³ (67 X 70 mm), and the primary transmission is done from now on by chain. The cylinders are out of aluminum. The P2 prototype starts production in 1968 and receives the patronym of T150 Trident, because following the example Bonneville T120, she is announced like having a top speed of 150 miles/h. starting is still done with the kick.
In 1970, the mudguards are painted and raise a white central band, reduction is lengthened, the crown passing from 52 to 53 teeth.
For 1971, a new framework which acts as oil tank is conceived by Umberslade Hall. The American version receives reserve in the shape of drop purple and white as on Bonneville. The version distributed on the old continent is satisfied with a purple square tank covered with a painting Regal Purple. The two versions are distributed with silencers loud-hailer.
In 1972, a gear box with 5 reports/ratios is available in option. Final reduction is shortened, the pinion of exit of box passes from 19 to 18 teeth.
For 1973, the Trident is transformed into T150 V, with the adoption of brake Lockheed a disc 250 mms in diameter to the front one. The mudguards are not painted any more, but chrome.
In 1975, the Trident is famous T160. The cylinders are inclined, as on the BSA. It is avoided of an electric starter and a disc of brake the back. The selector speed migrates of the left side of the motor bike.
The Trident was also illustrated in compétition. In 1970, Malcolm Uphill finishes first with the first with TT. But most known of the Trident is Slippery Slam (Sam slipping it). Its pilot, Tom Dickie, gives him this nickname because a problem of lubrication projects oil on the aft wheel at the time of the Bol of gold.
Despite everything these improvements, the Trident cannot compete with the Honda CB 750 Furnace offering better dynamic services, reliability moreover.
The colors available are:
- 1968 and 1969: Aqua Marina
- 1970: Orange Dark
- 1971 and 1972: Purple/White and Treat Purple
- 1973, 1974 and 1975: Red black/
- 1976: Cheerokee Red and Sunflower
BSA Rocket 3
The concept of the Trident was already well led in 1963, but BSA, then owner of Triumph, delays his exit. 1968 thus should be awaited so that Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3 appear. The principal difference between the two model comes from the slope from 15° forwards engine within the framework from the BSA. This framework is a double cradle. She is proposed only with one red color with white nets.Rocket 3 will have a career less long than the Trident, it disappears at the same time as the firm in 1972.
X75 Hurricane
The original idea comes from Gift Brown, then directing of the American branch of BSA. He wants to renovate the customers of BSA. He decides, without informing his direction of it, to entrust the project to a young designer of Illinois, Craig Vetter. He works out a prototype starting from Rocket 3 in 1969. Although the project is approved by the direction, the financial problems make that it should be waited until 1972 so that X75 is presented to the public, with Earl' S Court, under the Triumph mark.
X75 proposes a saddle-tank unit out of red polyester of color. Two bands yellow run on the sides of the tank and the sides of saddle. The front mudguard is chrome.
The other characteristic of X75 is all three exhaust box, which makes resemble the right-sided of the motor bike an organ. Paradoxically, although it is an element making it possible to recognize X75, Craig Vetter acknowledges not to appreciate this style.
It would have left approximately 2 000 specimens of X75 Hurricane.
In the Years 1990, the French preparer Mécatwin pays homage to X75 by producing X90.
750 and 900 Hinckley Trident
In 1991, Triumph reappears with a mythical model: the Trident. She sees herself declined in two different cubic capacities, 750 and 900 cm ³. Both use the very new engine of three cylinders on line four times, respectively announcing 87 and 98 horses. The cycle part makes up of a framework beam out of steel, brakes 296 mms in diameter with before and of 255 mm to the back.
The second year is seen largely improved. The tank receives a two-tone decoration of the most beautiful effect, many elements such as the Rétroviseur S, the side Béquille or the line of exhaust is replaced by elements of better quality. The position of control is made more comfortable thanks to a lower saddle and lower footrests and ahead.
The two models will receive a slope of Carburateur S Keihin the last year of their marketing, in 1998.
They are available in the following colors:
- 1991 and 1992: British Racing Green, Red Cherry and Cherry Black
- 1993: British Racing Green/Cream, Diablo Black/Red and Candy Red/Black
- 1994,1995 and 1996: British Racing Green/Cream, Diablo Black/Red (900 only)
- 1997: Jet Black/Red, Quicksilver/Blue Cobalt, British Racing Green/Cream and Quicksilver (750 only)
- 1998: Pacific Blue (750 only), Jet Black/Red (900 only) and Pacific Blue/Silver (900 only)
