History
The archipelago was discovered in 1506 by a sailor Portuguese, Tristan da Cunha ( Tristão da Cunha ), which gave its name to the principal island. There it could not besides accost. Ilha de Tristão da Cunha was anglicized thereafter in Tristan da Cunha .
The first survey of the archipelago was made by the French frigate the Hour of the Shepherd in 1767. Statements were taken and an approximate survey of the coast was made. The presence of water to the great water fall of Big Watron and in a Lac on the northern coast was noted, and the results of the survey were published by a hydrographic of the Royal Navy in 1781.
The first permanent colonist was Jonathan Lambert, of Salem (Massachusetts), which arrived at the islands in 1810. He declared them as being his property and named off them “Islands Refreshment”. Its reign was short, because he died of a naval accident in 1812. However, the great richness which it gained while selling of the Huile of sea elephant with the boats of passage is, appears he, always hidden some share on Tristan da Cunha.
In 1815, the Britanniques annexed officially the islands, mainly to make sure that the French could not use the islands as a base for a rescue operation of Napoleon Bonaparte of his prison with Sainte-Hélène.
The permanent establishment began in 1816 when the corporal William Glass obtained the authorization to remain on the island with woman and children at the time of his demobilization.
In 1961, an volcanic eruption imposed the evacuation of all the population in Great Britain. The inhabitants regained their island in 1963.
